California Title Transfers

Bought a new car? Bring us the title and we will transfer it into your name — the whole transaction is handled here at our counter.

A title transfer is where most people get tripped up: the wrong signature line, a missing odometer reading, an unreleased lien. We check the paperwork with you before anything is submitted, so it does not come back rejected weeks later.

Smog is generally required, with two common exceptions: family transfers, and gasoline vehicles four model years old or newer. That newer-vehicle exemption does not cover diesels — a late-model diesel truck still needs a smog certificate, so check with us before you assume. If the title is missing entirely, a REG 227 lets us move forward without it.

What to bring

  • The signed California title (pink slip)
  • A valid smog certificate — unless the transfer is exempt
  • A bill of sale with the purchase price and date
  • Your driver license or ID
  • A REG 227, if the title is lost or was never received

DMV forms

We keep blank copies at the counter — you do not have to print anything.

Not sure you have everything? Text us at 805-710-7219 and we will confirm before you drive over.

Title Transfers — common questions

Do I need a smog check to transfer a title in California?

Usually yes. The two most common exemptions are family transfers (parent, child, grandparent, spouse, sibling) and gasoline vehicles that are four model years old or newer. Diesels are specifically excluded from that newer-vehicle exemption, so a recent diesel pickup still needs a smog certificate. There is also a small smog transfer fee on newer vehicles in place of the certificate.

What if the seller lost the title?

A REG 227 lets us apply for a duplicate title and complete the transfer at the same time. Bring whatever registration paperwork you do have.

How long do I have to transfer a title after buying a car?

California gives the buyer 10 days from the date of sale before transfer penalties begin to accrue. Coming in early saves money.
