An out-of-state transfer normally means a DMV appointment, a separate trip for a VIN verification, and a stack of forms. We do all of it in one stop. Drive the vehicle over, bring the paperwork, and we handle the rest.
If the vehicle is financed, the lender holds the title — bring the out-of-state registration instead and we will work from that.
What to bring
- The out-of-state title — or the registration, if the vehicle is financed
- A California smog certificate
- A weight certificate (trucks only)
- The vehicle itself — drive it here for the VIN verification
- Proof of California insurance
DMV forms
We keep blank copies at the counter — you do not have to print anything.
Not sure you have everything? Text us at 805-710-7219 and we will confirm before you drive over.
Out-of-State Transfers — common questions
Do I need a VIN verification for an out-of-state car?
Yes — every vehicle entering California from another state needs one. We do VIN verifications at our Grover Beach office, so you do not need a second appointment somewhere else. Drive the vehicle over and we handle the verification and the registration in the same visit.
My out-of-state car is financed and the bank has the title. Can you still help?
Yes. Bring your current out-of-state registration and we will process the transfer and coordinate the title with your lienholder.
Does my out-of-state vehicle need a California smog check?
In almost all cases, yes. The vehicle must pass a California smog inspection before it can be registered here.
